All the News That’s Fit to Veg
May 30, 2011 at 10:11 am | Posted in Food, Photography | 22 CommentsTags: food photography, summer, VegNews
No longer hot off the presses but still just as pertinent, I’m only just flipping through to the final pages of the May/June 2011 issue of VegNews. So thickly layered with juicy tidbits about vegan weddings, travels, and newsworthy items, along with the usual enticement of new recipes, this is not one to rush through. If you did, you would risk missing such ideal summer party nibbles as the Sardinian-Inspired Crostini:

Or perhaps that spicy little Asian-fusion number, the Korean Tacos with Pear-Cilantro Slaw:

Which I can testify, are every bit as distinctively delicious as they look.
In light of the recent VegNews stock photo scandal, I feel that it’s necessary for me to clarify a few things here. I for one am glad that issue was brought to light, because things will only get better from here. Mistakes were made, acknowledged, and hopefully corrected. Moving forward, VegNews has pledged to use only vegan photos, and always accurate photos for the recipes published, so it sounds like a win-win situation if there ever was one. Better yet, you can rest assured that many of those recipe photos, such as those above, will be coming from my kitchen and my camera, so you can feel confident that you’re getting the real deal- no bull.
And of course, you can still expect my column every other issue, so prepare yourself for a serious sugar rush in the upcoming July/August issue… It’s gonna be a scream!

It was a shame the scandal happened, and pretty lame on their part but it’s over and no use talking about it anymore. Forgive and forget, I say. You’re right – things can only get better. Those tacos look amazing. I love crunchy bean sprouts in the summer time.

Those look great. I’m glad you are the one filling many of VegNews’s pages! I initially wrote about the scandal, and I was very disappointed when I was first was informed about it. I’m still sad to hear that ever happened, but I’ve always loved reading VegNews, and can’t find it in me to boycott the magazine. Yes, it was very poor journalism, but until a better a Veg magazine reveals itself, I’ll probably always skim through its pages.

Having your beautiful photographs of VegNews recipes to look forward to is the perfect ending to this unfortunate incident. The magazine can only get better as a result.

Love the look of those tacos, the slaw really sounds fantastic. My husband and I recently decided that in addition to eating vegetarian a couple nights a week, we’d like to start eating vegan a couple nights as well…I’ll have to check out that magazine!

I’m so excited to hear this means more of your photos in the pages!! I love having a photo to reference when making something.. but if it’s not of the actual recipe, what’s the point!?

Wow. Some how I missed the entire scandal, however I do like when these things seem to have a happy ending and actual improvement, which this one does. I think in general it’s bad form to use stock photography that in no way reflects the final dish. Obviously we know food photography often does things that are slightly unnatural in order to make it show up better on the page, but showing something that wasn’t even made by the original recipe is a bit much.
Your photos on the other hand are stunning.
